Senior Community Service Employment Programme

In the United States, the government believes that everyone should be able to achieve the American Dream, regardless of their age.  This is why senior community service employment programmes have been set up, as they give senior citizens the opportunity to become financially independent, retrain and give back to their community, all the while working on their existing skills and knowledge to work towards achieving their own dreams.  These types of programmes do not currently exist in the United Kingdom, but they are funded by the Department of Labor in the United States.

What is the Purpose of a Senior Community Service Employment Programme?

The purpose of a senior community service employment programme is to offer training to older people who are on low incomes, unemployed or who are struggling to find new employment.   They often offer work based learning programmes for older citizens.  Senior citizens who take part in the programme get paid the highest federal, state or local minimum wage in community services that are non-profit.  For example, they will be placed in day care centres, schools, senior centres and hospitals.  These employment opportunities are non subsidised, meaning that employers could save a lot of money by participating in a senior community service employment programmes, whilst giving older people the opportunity to provide back to the community and enhance their own skills.
