Doing Community Service

Giving Back to the Community

If you feel that there are aspects of your community that need improving to benefit the lives of the members of the community then you should try to get involved in any way you can. You'll be pleased to know there are lots of options available to individuals to help their communities improve and develop. The likelihood that your community is already a perfect enclave of the country is slim, and members of the community have varying views about what needs to be improved and how. Community service is becoming more and more vital in these difficult economic times, where governments are no longer able to provide all the services a community needs, and therefore, it relies on individuals with a strong sense of improving the lives of others to step in and achieve what others cannot.

How can someone do community service?

There are a variety of ways to get involved in community service activities:

- Look for local charities who try to offer their recipients something you are interested in. If you have sympathy to the plight of the homeless for instance, then there are charities who offer assistance to the homeless by feeding and clothing them, as well as offering legal assistance and ways to improve their lives over the long term.

- Try to join in community projects. There are often community drives to clean up a local park or rejuvenate an area of the community. You can easily get involved in one of these projects by offering your area of expertise, even if it's something simple like cleaning or DIY.

- If you think there's something lacking in your community, then try and link up with people who share your view and do something about it. You will be surprised by how many people will want to get involved and make a difference.

- Write to your local politicians and try and make a difference that way. Bring up issues that you think need addressing and offer your assistance in helping to resolve these issues.

What is the nature of community service?

Doing community service does not need to be so time consuming. Taking part in a community project for a few hours a week can make a real difference to your community. Once you sign up to doing community service, you will be assigned a particular task agreed by yourself and the leaders of the project. They will evaluate your skills and the amount of time you can offer and recommend a way for you to get involved. They will also be receptive to your ideas, so if you have a particular role in mind or an idea to improve the outcome of the project then you can suggest it.

An important aspect of doing community service is not to treat it like your 9-5 job, but instead, treat it like something that is fun. Many people like to get their friends and family involved in community projects in order to bring their group closer together because they are sharing an important experience. Also, people often build friendships with other members of the community project, and it is a good way to expand your social circle. Most importantly, treat it like a hobby, not a job, and have fun while you are doing it.
